Torches
One important thing you'll need while playing minecraft is a torch. Torches lit up in rooms stop monsters from spawning in your house . They're pretty useful, so you should know how to make one. Here's how :First go mine for coal, if not, make sure you have some. Then create one or more sticks, depending on how many torches you want. You can press the 'E' button or use your crafting table for crafting torches. You simply place the stick in one box, and the coal above it. now that you have those there, you should see a pack of 4 torches. Take these, and if you have a square house, i would light one torch on every wall. It is also important to light the outside of your house, in case you live near a monster spawner.
Doors
Ah.....doors, sweet doors......Yes, where would we be without them? It is very important for one to memorize the patterns for a door. And in case you haven't, here they are: you will need six blocks of wooden planks. Go to your crafting table And fill in every block except the last vertical one on the right. then you will have a wooden door. Go outside of your house and click on the floor underneath where the door would be to place it. ONLY PLACE A DOOR DURING THE DAY!!! I cannot stress this enough. To open/close a door, move your cursor over it and press the left mouse button. Be sure to keep all doors CLOSED during night.

Surviving Your First Night
Did you buy minecraft and have no idea what to do? First, get used to the controls. The left mouse button destroys blocks , such as grass, trunks of trees, and animals. The right mouse button places what you destroyed in the chosen area.Use the w, a, s, and d keys to move forward, left , right, and backwards. On your very FIRST day of minecraft, you should know that the hardest part of the game is surviving night. Minecraft has a day and night rotation. day lasts about 10 minutes and night lasts about half as long. there are also monsters that come out to attack you at night, so you'll need to have a shelter by then. these are some of the monsters:
Creepers
Creepers are horrible. They follow you until they are extremely close
to you (about 1 or 2 blocks) and then explodes, creating a massive hole in the ground,
and destroying everything near it for about 5 blocks in every direction. STAY AWAY FROM CREEPERS!
Zombies
Zombies aren't so hard. They are VERY slow, and announce their arrival with a rumbling groan. they can jump fast, however. Just craft yourself a wooden sword, and fight them off! Here's how to craft a sword. Destroy wood from out of the trunk of a tree. Press the 'E' button to craft. Place the block of wood in one of four squares up at the top. In the single square next to it, 4 wooden planks should appear. click on it, and drag it into your inventory. Click on it again and drag it over to the four squares. Right click on two of them, and a 4 sticks should appear in the single square. Go over to your crafting table, and place the stick in the bottom center. Then place the two remaining plank blocks in a vertical row above the stick. Then, a sword will appear. Take the sword, and prepare to kick some zombie butt!
Giant Spiders
Ooh.....Already at spiders, are we? They're ugly... But on the bright side, if you kill them with your new sword, ( which is easy to do ) they give you string. String can be used for many things, and I'll get to that later. Spiders have glowing red eyes that make them easier to spot in the night.

Skeleton Archers
I've had this question a lot- are all skeletons archers? The answer is yes. There is no other type of skeleton.
Skeletons have a bow and arrow and can KO you in 4 hits! But, unlike zombies, aren't easy to kill. They spawn in distant places, and burn in daylight, with zombies.
